The healing and soothing power of water

The healing and soothing power of water

We live in a beautiful world. A beautiful, watery world. If you have ever noticed you feel calmer, healthier or happier when you’re near the ocean or river, there are a number of psychological and physical reasons why.

We are water

More than 70% of our planet is covered in water, and our bodies are made up of about that percentage of water too. The plasma in our blood is made up of water, salt and protein. And both our brains and hearts are well over half made up of water. When we are in or close to the water, we are surrounded by the molecules that make up who we are.

We are reliant on water

As a species, our wellbeing and livelihoods depend on water. For many thousands of years, our ancestors had to work hard to have access to clean water, and were reliant on rainfall and rivers to keep their crops, livestock and families alive. The sight or sound of water can release relaxing chemicals in to our brains and bodies. It’s almost as if we know that our survival is dependent on water, and are calmed and relieved when we have access to water sources nearby.

Positive negativity

Water is full of negative ions, which are atoms with more electrons than protons. Negative ions are produced in natural environments and by plants during photosynthesis. But they are also generated by moving water such as in rivers, oceans and even in showers and pools. Waterfalls produce a lot of negative ions due to the force with which the water is moving. Negative ions are actually good for humans. They can help us absorb oxygen, improve our mood and concentration. Because of its energy compound, being around water can reduce stress and make us feel happier.

Beach boys and girls

Days at the beach are as Aussie as backyard barbecues, a trip to the footy or a schnitty at the pub. More than 80% of Australians live within what is deemed to be a coastal zone. We have long suspected that living near the beach and enjoying visits regularly was good for us. In a 2013 article, environmental psychologist Mathew White studied census data in England to gauge how living near the coast affects people. White found that living closer to the sea significantly improved people’s wellbeing. Research concludes that the ocean offers opportunities to de-stress, achieve a sense of balance, relax and recharge.

Sea senses

A trip to the ocean engages all of our senses; it is a complete sensory experience. There are the beautiful colours of the water and the way it glistens in sunlight. There are the crisp beach smells and the taste of salt on our lips. We hear the relaxing and repetitious sounds of the waves crashing and feel the sensation of the gritty sand between our toes and fingers. When all of our senses are activated in this way, it’s difficult to experience anything else. Worries seem to wash away and we are given a wonderful chance to just be.

Beneficial bubble baths

If you can’t get down to the beach, there is just as much benefit to be found in a warm bubble bath. Use some essential oils, light a candle and pop on a playlist and you will find that stresses seem to slip away. Baths are a great idea for people of all ages. If you have an angsty or unhappy teenager, offering to run them a bath is often a great way to create some space and sanctuary for them.

Drink it up

We all know how important it is to drink water every day- around eight glasses is recommended. When you are well hydrated, your circulatory system will perform better, and keep your kidneys functioning properly. Water also helps keep your joints lubricated and reduces information and pain associated with dehydration. Drinking water can also help alleviate headaches, keeps you alert and helps you to think clearly.

Water features for the home and garden

Water plays a special part in Feng Shui, the ancient art of designing living and work spaces to promote a positive energy flow that creates harmony for the people who use them. Water is considered one of the five base elements of the system. Water-based features such as a swimming pool, pond, fish tank or fountain are believed to be highly beneficial for health and destiny. If you don’t have the space for an elaborate water feature, Feng Shui followers believe that even a bowl of fresh water in the east or southeast corner of the home will bring good energy.
